      We take software for granted, but it's obviously crucial to getting any work done on a computer. It's what makes computers and smartphones and tablets (and these days, for that matter, cars, televisions, and microwave ovens) actually do things. Without it, your computer or other device is simply a case with nice buttons and lights.

  Vejam essa ambiguidade:

  Segundo os dicionários Longman e Michaelis, to take something for granted pode ser traduzido como "tomar como certo" ou "não dar valor a algo".

  to take for granted tem esses dois sentidos encontrados no dicionário, e a pergunta é qual o significado da expressão nesse contexto,

  que pode ser entendido pela contradição but.
