A identificação de documentos a partir de sua descrição
bibliográfica é prática milenar na biblioteconomia, ocorrendo desde
a Antiguidade, quando os bibliotecários inscreviam nas paredes das
bibliotecas dados sobre os livros do acervo. Atualmente, as bases
de dados bibliográficos, com registros de descrição altamente
padronizados, continuam sendo importantes instrumentos de
identificação e acesso às publicações.
